“It’s a crazy idea but it just might work!”

Science Boffins Provide Entertainment at School Science FairsScience Boffins have a great reputation for the provision of entertainment at school science fairs and fêtes.

We can provide an activity table so that passers-by are engaged with a variety of challenging hands on science experiments that will have the crowds milling around to see what is happening.

You can even ask for the ever popular slime making to be included so your guests have a special take home gift - a must for all budding younger scientists!

As an alternative, our Boffins can perform a show, generally about 30 minutes, to a gathered audience. These demonstrations contain some of the flashier experiments which are sure to WOW everyone! Or, why not get the best of both worlds, and combine both a table top activity stand and static presentations at pre-set times?

Science School Assemblies by Science BoffinsScience Assemblies and School Workshops are a great way of stimulating your students' desire to discover more about science and their world.

Who would have thought that science could be such fun?

Our entertaining stories for assembly ideas and spectacular experiments often need young volunteers and press-ganged teachers!

To get funding for the event I had to apply for a grant and part of the conditions of the grant were that I had to hand out questionnaires to the teachers that attended the event. Here is a typical response:

“It was hands-on and made relevant to modern use."

Science Shows for Schools by Science BoffinsOur School Science Shows and Workshops enthral pupils in schools, museums and libraries. During National Science Week we are able to offer fun but Educational Science workshops.

Usually lasting between 30 and 60 minutes, a school science show or primary science workshop can include any of the following topics:

Our School Workshops and Demonstrations:

NEW FOR 2018! Almost every child dreams of being their favourite superhero, and all superheroes have one thing in common; they save the world. In this interactive workshop your pupils have the opportunity to learn how they can save the world, without wearing capes and their pants on the outside! From filtering dirty water to using natural energy in everyday life, this renewable energy workshop will allow the future generations to learn the future of energy production, and how their small differences can both change and save the world.

States of Matter

Back by popular demand! We invite your pupils to join us on a fascinating interactive journey into the world of atoms and states of matter. Understanding that everything around them is made of atoms will lead us on to a discussion of the three states of matter illustrated by the children in a fun demonstration of Penguins in the Antarctic. They will then be introduced to Dry Ice, which is always a hit with the pupils (and teachers!). Dry Ice burps, giant bubbles and fire extinguishers will ultimately give way to individually making a small quantity of instant ice cream for on-the-spot consumption. Science does not get any better than this. Subject to a small premium for the supply of dry ice.

Plasma Balls & Playful Polymers

This fun workshop brings together some visual effects from the film industry with a very scientific slant which is guaranteed to have your pupils’ jaws drop with amazement. In this workshop, pupils create Frankenstein-like plasma flashes and can even have electricity pass through their bodies in order to light a fluorescent tube or see a miniature lightning strike. They may even get a high voltage shock on their noses. Moving on from Tesla coils we talk about polymers and how they are used on film sets to make noxious slime. The technique is fascinating and the resultant take-home pot of slime makes this a very popular workshop with pupils and teachers alike.

Animals including Humans

Humans are animals in their own right but just how similar are we? In this interactive workshop we look at where different animals appear in the food chain. A focus on diets and how a balance is critical to healthy living precedes our ‘Gums to Bums’ experiment which shows this food travelling through the digestive system into our blood. Some timely exercise will allow the children to see how the heart pumps blood around the body to maintain their energy levels.

Studying biology this term? Our Plants workshop will fit in perfectly with your lesson planning. Going down to their roots and exploring how they transfer water and nutrients to the plant, we build our way up to flowers and why they have pretty colours. Be a bee transferring pollen between flowers and making seeds, we then look at what’s inside those tiny seeds – and of course we can’t leave the leaves out. Finally, pupils can see if they can get into a Venus Fly Trap without being eaten!

Just wanted to say thank you for a fantastic day yesterday! Boffin Fiona was a huge hit! She was very well organised, excellent with the children and put on a fabulous performance. Both children and teachers were equally impressed.
